Prime Time, March 25, 2019 | How Sound Is Congress's Minimum Income Guarantee Plan?

Prime Time, March 25, 2019 | How Sound Is Congress's Minimum Income Guarantee Plan? Congress President Rahul Gandhi promised to provide up to Rs 72,000 per annum to 20 per cent of India's poorest families if his party comes to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP was quick to retaliate, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley calling the promise as a "bluff announcement". Today's Prime Time discusses: Can India bear the financial burden of this minimum income guarentee scheme? Will it hurt the country's GDP? Is giving out financial aid to poor families help those below the poverty line?
Economist Arun Kumar on the show says that the biggest challenge would be to identify those whose annual income falls below Rs 72,000 per annum especially given that the actual income of people employed in the unorganised sector is not known. (Audio in Hindi)
